75th Anniversary - 2009

2009 marked the 75th Anniversary of our Club.  The milestone was celebrated via three main events:
 

Midwinter Tournament & Luncheon

On Sunday 21st June we ran a 75th Anniversary Pairs Bridge tournament, generously sponsored by SBS Bank, and this was followed by a mid-winter luncheon at the Christchurch Casino.  The Bridge event saw the clubrooms almost bursting at the seams, and the luncheon was also well-attended.

The Bridge Prizewinners were as follows:

♦   1st Senior Reserve - Jan Palmer & Jillian Marshall
♦   5th Senior - Darcy Preston & Tony Crow
♦   4th Senior - Dawn Allison & Cath Stowell
♦   3rd Senior - Gerard Moot & Helena Noordanus
♦   2nd Senior - Gerald Staniland & Mohinder Sachdev
♦   1st Senior, and Overall Winners - Kathleen Catley & Jenny Bailey

Ron Klinger

The second major event was held over the weekend of 21-23 August, with internationally- acclaimed Ron Klinger hosting a series of Bridge improver classes at Crockfords.

The topics covered were: Competitive Bidding & Winning Tips on Constructive Bidding, Declarer Play at Trumps & No Trumps, Opening Leads & Defensive Play, Slam Bidding. In addition, an informal lunch was held on the Saturday, at which Ron was a guest speaker.

Formal Dinner

This was held at the Russley Golf Club on 1st November, with about 100 people in attendance.  One of the highlights of the evening was Life Member, Phillip Maples, presenting a history of the Club.

In addition, Club members had the chance to have a piece of the 75th Anniversary Cake at the Grade midwinter functions in June.
